SNMP Monitoring Download

What is SNMP monitoring?

SNMP Monitoring in the most common terms, means the use of communication protocols available to gather information about the status of communication systems, whether routers, landline or cellphone communications. This article will talk about one of the most frequently used protocols, SNMP, and how to exploit it to collect data, including everything you need to know to start using SNMP monitoring. SNMP, or the Simple Network Management Protocol, belongs to the network application layer, and allows information to be exchanged between network devices.

SNMP works in two ways: with polls or traps. Polling consists of launching a remote query, either actively or on demand, running an operating query simultaneously. Meanwhile, a trap is a message sent by an SNMP device simultaneously, according to changes or events, to the configured address. To maximize SNMP monitoring, we recommend using both modes when setting up a monitoring system.

SNMP Polls

SNMP community strings, alphanumeric chains used to authorize operations, and that add an additional layer of security. When SNMP checks are launched against compatible devices, you get a list that contains a lot of data that might be difficult to interpret at first:
  • snmpwalk –v 1 –c public

Each line returned by snmpwalk has an OID (object identifier) and matches a piece of data specified by the device. To better understand what the value returned by the SNMP check, you can install the MIB (management information base) of the system manufacturer. MIB is a library that translates this numerical chain into a readable format that allows us to interpret data in SNMP Monitoring Download.

There is also a website where you can consult with this OID if in doubt. If you know the OID you want to monitor, you can do a query like this by showing the alphanumeric code that appears after the IP address in question:
  • snmpwalk –v 1 –c public IF-MIB :: ifPhysAddress.2

SNMP Voting Alerts

After data collection on the module through SNMP voting is done, we can make a warning about Pandora FMS for these modules, run actions proactively in the threshold functions we have configured, and they work in the same way as other warnings for each module on Pandora FMS.

Monitoring SNMP Traps

First configure your device to send traps when certain conditions are met, and both sets of tools that can collect the SNMP trap it receives, whether it is a machine with the necessary services, or monitoring software. The way you configure an SNMP device will depend on the manufacturer's model and the device itself, and is done from the management interface that can be accessed through the browser and its IP address. Traps can be accepted on Linux using demon snmptrapd, installed as follows, eg on the CentOS system:
  • yum install net-snmp-utils net-snmp-libs net-snmp

SNMP Trap Warning

Alerts can also be configured through SNMP monitoring for traps we prepare. In this case they will not function in the same way as other modules, unlike SNMP voting, but instead are based on filtering rules. Using this rule, we can identify traps belonging to other devices, filter the trap content, OID, and SNMP Monitoring Download.
