SNMP Oid Monitoring and Infrastructure

The SNMP Oid was developed in the 1980s by the IETF (Internet Engineer Task Force) as part of IP (Internet Protocol Suite). There were a few competitors who were developed by enterprises, but over time SNMP became the actual benchmark for monitoring network-connected devices. In addition to providing SNMP monitoring capabilities, it also provides the ability to remotely manage a variety of devices.

SNMP-based monitoring systems consist of proxies, which are installed on network-connected devices and network management systems / stations (NMSs), which are used to gather information from an agent's activity, as well as to run tests against network-connected devices-usually the purpose of determining health.

In addition to the SNMP agent providing information about its devices, it may also push notifications (known as traps) over the network to NMS. This will be used for information such as that the device just started (known as coldstart). In cases where SNMP is used for device remote administration, users push changes across networks to agents installed on devices, which makes the planned changes.

SNMP Oid 

Each part of the information provided by the SNMP agent, and each type of trap it supports, is associated with a unique identifier known as the object identifier (OID). OID is a system created by ITU and ISO organizations for data standardization. It is not only used for network monitoring or SNMP; it is the standard used for all types of data. An example is Hl7, which is related to the classification of electronic medical records or LDAP protocol attributes and object classes. Think of it as an international standard for indexing data.

The OID system is a hierarchy, that is, a tree structure. For example, OID 1.3.6, 6 will be part of the hierarchy 1.3, and 3.6 will be part of the 1.archory and so on ... The root of the OID tree is only two values: 1. For ISO (where it is located) SNMP Live) and .0 for the ITU. Some sub-sections of L1 are free templates, and other sections are assigned to specific companies for use, but the other three sections require your registration with ISO or ITU. This includes government, large business etc.

Most OIDs for devices and network systems in business then fall down

  • 1.3.6.1.4.1 - Registered IANA (Internet Numbers Allocation Authority) for private enterprises.

Under this hierarchy, you'll see OIDs for all companies that are setting up custom OID equipment. Here are some examples:
  • 1.3.6.1.4.1.9 - Cisco Systems (SNMP has been embraced as early as you can see)
  • 1.3.6.1.4.1.2636 - Juniper
  • 1.3.6.1.4.1.311 - Microsoft.

Now, suppose that the NMS station wants to pull the Output Queue interface from a Cisco router; it will apply for the OID value: 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.276.1.1.1.1.1.11

MIBs and Enterprise Oid

The MIB (Management Information Base) contains descriptions for each OID that is registered with ISO or ITU. MIB is an ASCII file, which can be read and formatted in a human way to work with the so-called MIB compiler. The MIB compiler simply creates a browseable tree from OIDs based on its individual OID descriptions.

The OID descriptions contained in the MIBs provide a short syntax for the name of each user OID, the type of data that is allowed to be stored, and information about how to use the OID. Common misconceptions are that MIBs are necessary to enable functionality on SNMP agents or devices. This is not true;downloading the MIB to this agent or client agent only allows you to provide more detailed information about the OID that you provide to SNMP Oid.
